When Is SSDI Paid in September 2026? Full Disability Payment Schedule

Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) payments in September 2026 are scheduled for September 3, September 9, September 16 or September 23. Your exact payment date depends mainly on your birthday and when you first started receiving Social Security benefits.

September 2026 SSDI payment dates

SSDI payment date Who receives payment
Thursday, September 3 People who began receiving Social Security before May 1997
Wednesday, September 9 Birthdays from the 1st through the 10th
Wednesday, September 16 Birthdays from the 11th through the 20th
Wednesday, September 23 Birthdays from the 21st through the 31st

If you receive both SSDI and SSI, your SSDI payment is generally scheduled for September 3. SSI payments are separate and are scheduled for September 1, 2026.

How the SSDI schedule works

Most SSDI beneficiaries receive payments on one of three Wednesdays each month:

  • The second Wednesday applies to birthdays from the 1st through the 10th.

  • The third Wednesday applies to birthdays from the 11th through the 20th.

  • The fourth Wednesday applies to birthdays from the 21st through the 31st.

This schedule applies to most people who started receiving benefits in May 1997 or later. If you began receiving Social Security before May 1997, the usual payment date is the third day of each month rather than a Wednesday.

What if your SSDI payment is late?

Payments sent by direct deposit or Direct Express may appear at different times depending on the bank or card provider. Check your account first on your scheduled payment date.

If the payment has not arrived, the Social Security Administration advises waiting three additional mailing days before reporting it missing. You can check payment details through a my Social Security account or contact Social Security through the agency’s help center.

SSDI is not SSI

SSDI and Supplemental Security Income are separate programs. SSDI is based on an eligible worker’s earnings and work history, while SSI is needs-based and generally paid on the first day of each month.

If you receive SSDI only, use the birthday-based schedule above to find your September 2026 payment date.
